A really good book for absolute beginners is called ‘beginner’s Russian grammar’ ISBN 0-340-77549-1. It has the alphabet (printed and cursive) and covers all aspects of basic grammar. One widely recommended book is A Comprehensive Russian Grammar by Terence Wade but it’s mind-boggling if you are a complete beginner. It goes without saying, a good dictionary is essential. Unless you come from a linguistic background, you would also benefit from an English grammar book, because it is impossible to learn the cases unless you know grammar.
As for computer teaching aids, there’s Rosetta Stone which is good for vocab. and pronunciation but terrible for grammar, so in conjunction with your grammar book it works well. Book Review Of The Russians Are Coming By Lily Alex
If you’re wondering where you’ve heard the phrase “The Russians are Coming” before you’re in good company. The phrase has some interesting history behind it. It was originally attributed to the first United States Secretary of Defense, James Forrestal in 1949. According to one source he said, “The Russians are coming, the Russians are coming. They’re right around. I’ve seen Russian soldiers!” Later that same year he committed suicide by jumping out a hospital window. Obviously some issues! But keep in mind this man also held the position of Secretary of the Navy during the last year of WWII and was deeply involved two years before his death in the alien landing (or whatever) in Roswell, New Mexico. You can imagine what the conspiracy theorists made of his death.
Next the phrase became the title of a film directed by Norman Jewison staring Carl Reiner, Eva Marie Saint and Alan Arkin. In the film a Soviet submarine inadvertently beaches near a small American town. The resulting human interactions made a farce of the cold war. The book that is the subject of this review was not the basis for the movie which was actually based on a children’s book by Nathanial Benchley called “The Off-Islanders.” Lily Alex, the author of this book wasn’t even born when the movie was made. However she was born and raised in Russia before the collapse of Communism and has lived in the USA and Canada since 1994 which does give her a wonderful background for a book exploring the interactions between Americans and Russian immigrants
These interactions might not be as amusing as those between the stereotypical Americans and Russians in the movie (Believe me, you’d recognize every one of them from the gossipy switchboard operator to the stiffly formal Russian Captain), but Lily’s characters have an honesty that can’t be achieved by simple one-dimensional stereotypes. (You might even wonder if one of the more interesting and well-drawn characters in the book is a younger Ms. Alex!). Instead of Russian sailors, her characters are rather ordinary types like all of us: mothers, fathers, children, adulterers, con-men; there’s even a bit of a connection with the Russian mafia to add spice to the mix.
The story takes place in today’s world in a small American city, but the Russian characters spend a lot of time remembering their lives as they led them in Russia–or the Soviet Union. Of course author Lily Alex’s youth was spent in Russian during the final days of the Soviet Union and the Communist Party so she can write about those days with accuracy. For those of us living here during that time this is easily the most interesting part of the book.
Another thing this critic found interesting is that in spite of the distance between the characters and their native land, they are the same people they were there with the same issues. The kind are still kind, the loyal still loyal and the brutal and selfish no less degraded by the change of scenery.
There are a lot of books out describing the last days of the Russian Empire in a historical context. “The Russians Are Coming” by Lily Alex gives an individuals’ personal view of the era that one can find in few other books.

When you learn Russian numbers, it is easier to learn nouns along with them. For example, you can learn how to say one cat, two cats, etc., so that you do learn more vocabulary than you would by just concentrating on numbers. For those whose native language is English, learning to speak Russian involves a lot of memorization. The reason is that it is not enough for you just to learn the singular form of a noun because of the way the nouns change in the plural form. So if when learning the plural, you associate them with numbers you do kill two birds with one stone.
The easiest way to do this is to learn the numbers in Russian from 1 to 10. These are:

Once you know these numbers you can form the words for the numbers from 11 to 19 by adding nadtsat to the word for each number from 1 to 10. For example, 11 in Russian is odinnadtsat and 12 is dvenadtsat. You do drop the from the end of the word for four to form fourteen so that it is chetyrnadtsat. Twenty in Russian is davadtsat and to make the rest of the numbers in the twenties you simply use this word and the number word so that you have two separate words.
By learning the numbers in conjunction with nouns you can increase your vocabulary quite quickly. You also learn that there are several forms of the plural in Russian. The word for dog ends in /a/, but the plural form used with the numbers 2, 3 and 4, ends in /m/ and for five or more the word ends in/k/. When you are dealing with numbers higher than twenty in association with a noun, the use of numbers ending in 1, such as 21, 31, 41 and so on, the noun is written in the singular. The same rule for 2, 3, and 4 applies for 22, 23 and 24, as does the rule for five or more.
Once you master these numbers then move on to the hundreds and then the thousands. This may seem quite difficult but once you realize the pattern to the numbers in Russian it won’t take you long to know how to form them. The course you take in Russian should have a listening and speaking component so that you can hear and say the words to learn how to pronounce them correctly. Listening exercises should consist of saying numbers that you have to write as numerals. You can also ask others to quiz you by saying a number in English that you have to write in Russian. If you have a friend who speaks this language it will be even easier because then you can say the word for the number rather than write it.
Learning Russian does take more time than learning French and Spanish, for example, because of the difference in the way the letters are formed to spell out the words.
