The hidden costs of the governments proposals to increase tuition fees

The increases in tuition fees have far greater implications to the United Kingdom than just the increases in debt to University graduates, there are far more pressing issues which need to be addressed and rectified.

What are the options going to be for students wishing to apply to universities, there is the option to take up vocational course, or the option to defer entry for a year, they could always think outside of the box and decide to study abroad.

It’s not as simple and as clear cut as it seems though, in a sense our students are divided between those who want to go abroad and want to diversify, they find the prospect of studying/working/living aboard appealing and desirable. On the other side of the scale though there are those who are unwilling to put in the effort, not in a negative sense toward them, but in terms of the difficulties they may personally find living abroad. Certain people won’t be able to cope with living away from their families and may not be able to adapt and settle into new places, and for these people the option of studying abroad isn’t an option.

What we get following on from this is that they cannot get in the universities in the United Kingdom, deferring entry for another year and then reapplying won’t even guarantee entry anymore, the numbers applying, even this year after the announcement to increase to fee’s in 2012 has increased again from last year. Has there been an increase in the amount of university places though? No there hasn’t which means once again there will be thousands and thousands of students who won’t have be able to get a place at university, and will either take a year out or, if they cannot get entry the next year, will either end up doing a less valued degree at a lower quality university which will in the short term especially, of not much benefit to them.

There are of course positives to the idea of studying abroad; our school students will begin to take more of an interest in foreign cultures and foreign languages, especially European one’s. It may be the best way to finally improve the young’s knowledge, understanding and awareness of the rest of the world. We are not the centre of the world in terms of global importance, the future lie’s in the East, India and China are soon enough going to be the pioneers and the visionaries.

The Middle East has accomplished feats that in the West we would have deemed impossible and would never had attempted to do. Wouldn’t it be great to be a part of this?

The issue with this though in regards to the United Kingdom, is that many of these students who go to foreign universities may just decide to live and in work in the countries that they have studied in. It’ll be a far more desirable option, we’re constantly told of stories about how difficult it is to find post-graduate employment in England and how thousands of students remain unemployed after graduation. As they’ll now be adapted to living in that country and will by then, have more than sufficient grasp of the language and cultures, there’s no reason for them not to work there. You could be cynical towards this and say that, this would be of no loss to us as, our surplus of students are at least being used, they’re not needed here so it wont make any difference to our workforce. It won’t in the short term, but over time, our workforce will begin to be deprived of the most skilled, and the most intelligent as they don’t see a future in the country due to it’s lack of forward thinking and decreases in well educated gradates applying for United Kingdom based jobs.

The issue isn’t only university tuition fee’s though. The secondary school, well from my experiences anyway, is the cause of many of the problems we have. There was never importance placed upon foreign languages, we all knew of the importance of learning french and German, we’d try to put in the effort to learn what we could as we knew that it would be of great benefit. This was impossible though due to the complete lack of respect or care the school paid toward it, in my school the whole environment of learning foreign languages at school was appalling, the rooms were the worst in the school, the teachers were incapable of running a class let alone teaching the students something that is difficult enough even with good tuition. Why would anyone therefore want to take up something that the school didn’t care about and placed no importance upon?

If the fees for foreign students we’re to dramatically increase as much as they are rumoured to do so, will there actually be a major effect on our countries University Culture and job market? Probably not, The impression I have, and this is based upon what I see on at my University, they come to the United Kingdom to study in an English University, but many of them wish they hadn’t and are unable to fully adapt to life in the United Kingdom, wealth plays a part as well, the high costs already means that international students are far wealthier than their United Kingdom based counterparts, and despite attempts for there not to be, there will often be division between the groups, the international students will tend to stick together. They will of course add their own international stamp to the universities but often they just keep to themselves.

That’s not to say though that their only benefit and contribution is the financial one of the increased fee’s they have to pay. An international perspective, especially as a law student is of great value. I remember vividly my first year module about international law and human rights and how around the table in a seminar there we’re fellow students from, it was pretty much every continent of the world. The insight and analysis of human rights and equality would not have been as enlightening if it had been a table, which lacked international students.

The influence that international students provide, in terms of ideas and new types of thinking is what has, in fact the greatest universities in History, Alexandria and Padua for instance, their reputations which have lasted hundreds of years is because of the influence of difference cultures and the bringing together of international thinkers.

People who have studied in foreign countries today have shaped the world; it’s essential to widen our understanding of how the world works and how it functions. The world for instance would be a very different place if Mahatma Ghandi hadn’t studied law at University College London…..

Options of Learning German

There are tons of options for learning a new language. Not a single approach can be looked at as superior or inferior to others. What works for you will depend mostly upon how you learn and how accepting you are of the learning process. Some people have the most luck in classrooms while others have an easier time learning with audio and video materials. It’s possible you’ll need to test out a few different things before you come across the strategies that work the greatest for you. Upon completing all this, you have the capability of becoming altogether bi-lingual. Here are some recommendations you can benefit from if you aren’t positive how to begin learning German.

The best way to learn German or any new language is to be open to that language. It is easy for a person to say that they want to learn German but you can’t say that and then resist the parts about German that aren’t the same as your native language. Plenty of people have a difficult time because they try turning the “new” language into the “old” language. Each language has its own rules. This is the primary reason why most people find learning a language so hard. Things must match up for them. When you adopt the idea that learning German is far more than just vocab memorization, you will have a much easier time.

When learning a language like German, you should be prepared to feel uncomfortable sometimes. When you first begin learning a new language, you need to keep in mind that every person in your class, or who is working with your same tutor, is in the same spot as you. It’s best to get it out of your head that people may laugh at you if you don’t say something right or speak in the incorrect verb tense. You cannot be aware of yourself and be afraid to fail and hope to learn a new language. When you aren’t self-conscious, you will learn at a much quicker pace. When you take a beginners class in learning German, everybody else in the class will be new to the language too. It’s good to make mistakes and get your words confused.

Do you know of a local neighborhood where German is the predominant spoken language? Going to a town like that and spending time there may help you a lot. This is an easy way to immerse yourself in the language and to learn German while still having the comforts of home nearby if you get overwhelmed. Neighborhoods like these are great because the people who live and work in them use German the way it would be used in Germany (or any other country in which German is the main language). There is a vast difference between text book German and the German you’ll encounter on your travels to Germany. When you learn German this way, you will feel much more comfortable if you ever do go to a German spoken country.

There are so many different methods for learning German. It can be tough to find out which technique you should select for yourself. You might need to practice a few different approaches before you figure out which approach works the most wonderfully for you.

ESL schools – A perfect spot of German summer camps

ESL schools have achieved world-wide recognition for offering quality education and training for any language. ESL has its partnership with several institutions all around the world. They also organize holiday camps for the juniors and teenagers. I decided to learn German through ESL-schools. All the ESL-schools are located at a wonderful location all over the Europe. Moreover, use of modern and advanced teaching practices by the teachers itself describes the dedication level of the teachers towards the students. I always wanted to learn German particularly from the German schools in Switzerland.

Hence, I took admission into the German school located in Zug. The location where this institute is situated is very close to the lakeshore and is in the centre of town. I was quite overwhelmed on seeing large classrooms that are spacious enough and many other amenities offered by ESL for the students. These include games room, study room, many games like pool, pin machines and table football along with television and DVD player. I enjoyed surfing internet that is totally free by the school authority and relaxing in the lounge during free time. During German summer camps one can freely participate in sports and any outdoor activity.

The teachers at German schools in Switzerland give personal attention to each and every student. Either one can join the standard or intensive courses that are twenty or twenty-five lessons per week respectively. Optional classes are also provided that include one to one classes designed keeping in mind specific need of each student. Other is communication classes that are held two times per week. At the end of course they provide ESL certificate. It defines the result and level attained by the student. The level is categorized from elementary to advance.

If one is studying in a place completely new to that person, the basic thing required would be good accommodation. Accommodation provided by ESL during German summer camps is great. There are clean bedrooms with two to three beds in each room. Moreover, I could see beautiful view of lake and neighboring hills which was a wonderful feeling. There is a facility of sending e-mails or calling friends or family. This way schools authority makes sure to help one in staying in touch with the close ones so as to make them strong mentally. Under full security, efficient learning and multicultural environment helps in over all development of the student. I have learnt so much at ESL and I am really very proud of my decision to go there. ESL is acting as a link between several cultures.

Which language school is best for you?

In the last few years the number of private language schools in Belgrade has grown rapidly. These schools advertise courses of English, German, Italian and other foreign languages and in this sea of various institutions it is often very difficult to choose a school which integrates serious work, working atmosphere and acceptable price within itself. You will agree that the best thing to do is to follow a friend’s recommendation and enroll on a language course in a reliable, tried-out school. However, what can you do if there is no one who might make the recommendation? Language school is not difficult to find. We are surrounded by different advertisements, streets are full of leaflets, street posts are packed with glued posters…
In that situation the best thing is not to rush and get well informed before you reach your final decision. Here are a few useful tips:

Don’t be taken in by ads which promise you a miracle, something like  – learn English in two weeks and such like. If you think it through, you will see learning like that is impossible. Language is a specific matter – you can learn it all your life and even then you cannot say you have learned it completely. It is unlikely that you will master one level of language in 2-3 weeks even if you study 10 hours a day.

Make sure the company offering language courses is registered for that kind of business. According to the new Serbian law registered companies usually have the name Studio for teaching foreign languages (in Serbian: “skola stranih jezika”, “studio za ucenje stranih jezika”).

It is very important which course books are used in language teaching. In our environment (Beograd, Serbia) the best results for learning and teaching English language occurred with New Headway, New English File (Oxford), Cutting Edge, Language to go (Longman) and some other programs. Of course, course books are constantly improving and therefore, it is possible that, in time, other titles will earn their place in teaching English language.

Potential school should provide you with at least one free test class so as to check the quality of teaching on the spot and the ability of the teacher to stimulate you to learn a foreign language.

It appears that a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere enables students to learn a foreign language better and faster. Try to avoid schools which use private, cramped apartments as classrooms. A serious language school must have at least 5 genuine classrooms equipped with a big white/blackboard, CD player, TV and other teaching sources. Good idea for language schools is renting classrooms in elementary and high schools or other institutions of that kind because they can get excellently equipped space for less money so that they can adjust their prices to the needs of future students.

The cost of the course is relevant but not crucial. Many people think that high price means good quality. However, it is often not the case. Today, among language schools, there is great competition so smaller schools are often forced to keep the prices low to attract potential clients while the quality of teaching is the same, if not even better than in some bigger schools. Basically, monthly cost should not be under 2,000 dinars and there is often no reason for it to be higher than 2,500 din. because well organized schools can do business successfully even with such low cost. You should check if the course book or a copy of teacher’s notes as well as a CD are included in the offer because the price of teaching material is not to be underestimated.

It is desirable to have maximum of 8 students in classes because in that case all students get necessary attention.

All things considered, choice is not at all easy. You can never truly say which language school is the best but there is always a school that is best for you in particular. Amongst all criteria mentioned above, a trivial thing, such as location, course hours or discounts for attending different language courses at the same time, can influence your decision.

There is always a good chance to make a bad choice but bare in mind that it is never too late to change your mind and try some other school. After all, private language schools are there for YOU.
