Is the La Mariscal district of Quito, Ecuador safe for pedestrians during the daytime?
This summer I plan to attend the Quito Spanish Institute for six weeks in preparation for taking the D.E.L.E. exam at the superior level. I have read some negative things online about safety in Quito and in La Mariscal, the district of the city where the school is located. Is the area mostly just unsafe at night but reasonably secure during the day when I would be going to and from classes? Or is it a risky area at any time?
It’s generally safe during the day. I’ve spent a lot of time there and never had any problems-day or night.
When you said “safe for pedestrians” I right away got a picture of the street Juan Leon Mera. During the day buses and cars cruise through there like crazy. So be careful crossing the street. Amazonas and 6 de diciembre are pretty busy streets up there too.
Just be aware of your surroundings. Keep any bags right by you at all times. A friend left her purse under her chair while eating in a restaurant. Afterward we were headed to the embassy for a replacement passport.
There are lots of people during the day (even quite a bit a night) so muggings and stuff don’t USUALLY happen if you stay where the people are. The area is known for the many foreigners, so it does make it a target for thieves. Just be careful.
And if you need to go to the ATM do it during the day.

Where can I find free online Japanese lessons?
My school doesn’t offer Japanese, so I’m trying to self teach myself. As for the writing, I know the Katakana, and am now working on learning Hiragana. I’ve found genkijapan.net to have awesome games, and am watching some youtube videos on the grammar part. Does anyone know where else and what else I should do? Or any sites that would help me with my learning? Thank you.
